CO — OVEN 19

Co-oven aka portable pizza oven

During the Beyond Crisis Conference, organized by the MA Eco-Social Design from the Free University of Bolzano, many thoughts, concepts, and ideas about a sustainable future were shared, created, and discussed.

A lot of inspiring workshops were held among the central question “How to use the virus-induced situation to build up momentum for social-ecological “transformation?”

Our little Ortnerhof community was contributing to finding solutions for the topic of “Commoning, subsistence & sufficiency”, together with a lovely and productive group of like-minded people.

Small self-supporting communities are existing and managing their way to live off the grid, whilst generating new ideas of living in the present world. Especially during the current time, we think that life in communities and around the idea of commoning is beneficial in many ways, especially in terms of financial and social issues and challenges.

Commoning is about caring, sharing, and sustainable management of one’s self, the community as well as nature.

The challenge we faced during the workshop, was the question of how we can scale up the idea of commoning, to introduce more people and make them accept and integrate the concept into their daily lives.

Here is our Outcome:

A CO – OVEN
accessible to everyone, to bake bread, share recipes and ingredients, and overall be a meeting point.

it’s a step by step process, starting with one oven and leading towards a cloud of commoning:

  1. CO – OVEN: Shared community oven where food, ingredients, recipes, products, skills can be shared (sourdough as an icon); shared space, community and gatherings are created
  2. CO – OVEN 19: let’s spread a positive virus. create a social platform for CO – OVEN to increase visibility and reach more people (e.g. website, organize pizza festival, go to other festivals with CO-OVEN and make pizza); share knowledge, offer educational courses (e.g. how to make your sourdough); create timetables for when and where people meet (could be a smartphone app); social network
  3. CLOUD OF COMMONING: Start a supportive, decentralized network of different initiatives (e.g. bike kitchen; food saving); connect different types of service; build alliances; exchange experience, knowledge & resources; Digital and physical (e.g. open-source online platform; open map of commoning projects; physical infrastructures & tools)

A kind of liminal space, as Victor Turner, and famos ethnologist
would call it:
This liminal space is a kind of threshold state in which communities or individuals find themselves after they have broken away from a previous order through a ritual.

Our experience was very exciting! It was very inspiring to understand that it is OK to be slow and TO BE, what we so often forget in everyday life . . .

A pleasant calm has spread which was very valuable!

Nevertheless, our bodies all reacted differently! We felt various ups and downs (physically but also mentally)! We were driven by sport and a high engergy level but also kept by the calm. We found time to relax your body and mind!

The energy came suddenly – but as fast as she came – she also was gone! It has released deeper control over the mind and body.
Now we try to take care to give the previous normality more thoughtful space!

CLEAR SKY – Freedom or oppression?

How does it feel when you look into the sky?

I see a blue sky, within different shades of blues. Some clouds and some birds are introducing spring with their sounds. There are no vapour trails from the aircraft visible. The pure blue sky is with no human traces. I feel free but also caught. Something is clearly changing.

The situation affects our mind and body. Do we feel freedom or opression? Freedom for our mind, oppression for the body? Or is the clean air purifying our bodies and therefore making us stronger and more resistant to do what we want?

Is there a new dynamic and understanding evolving, that brings a different form of freedom and movement?

In one point we can be certain. The reduced air pollution is beneficial for our health.

“Air pollution, research shows, lowers our ability to fight off infections.” The article by Jamie Smith Hopkins discusses the effects and affects of polluted air in cities and industrial areas compared to the health of humans, in speciality lung problems.

Now, most of the companies and industries lowered their production, therefore the air quality should rise?

Will the situation change aswell in Alto Adige? And how?

How can we foster change?

Studies show, that in some regions the abrupt stop of our activities lead to a quick recovery of nature. We have to say that this is a state – we, as eco social designers, dreamed of. Just not under those circumstances.

But that’s where we are now. What can we do with it?

Our concern is, that everything will go back to „normality“ when we mastered the crisis. But we think that if we can make a change now, we can be better prepared for the future, with all the new challenges that might come.

Can we foster a change?
